About the school

A school born of a simple promise.

To bring children in Tanakpur and around a calm, modern, value-based education — close to home, never compromising on quality.

Our story

From a small dream in Kharkawal Gardens.

Nanda Convent School opened its doors on 04 June 2015, founded by the Nanda Educational and Welfare Society. The trust set out with a clear idea: that the children of Tanakpur and the surrounding villages deserved a school that combined the discipline of a convent tradition with the openness of a modern, inquiry-led classroom.

In the years since, the school has grown into a co-educational, CBSE-affiliated institution serving students from pre-primary to the senior school. Affiliation No. 3530509, currently valid for the period 01/04/2023 – 31/03/2028.

We remain a deliberately small school — close-knit, attentive, and proud of where we come from in the Kumaon hills.

“I believe in skill-building rather than textual literacy alone.”

Ms Janki Kharkwal

Master trainer in teaching English, Guidance and Counselling, and Value Education.

I had an ambition of a paradigm shift — to set up a school that would meet the aspirations of the students of Tanakpur, where the need for public-school education was felt inescapable. I believe in skill-building rather than textual literacy: developing the vital life skills of communication, creativity, management, leadership and decision-making, and conditioning the children to shape the future our nation requires.

Nanda Convent School is an edifice of faith where teachers teach and students learn beyond pen, paper and the black-board. A teacher cannot teach unless she is learning herself — as a lamp cannot light another lamp unless it continues to burn its own flame.

Mr B.C. Joshi shaped the very first classrooms of Nanda Convent School. His insistence on holistic grooming and a close teacher–student bond still runs through the way we work today.

The story in our crest.

Nanda Convent School official crest

The book at the centre depicts the treasure of knowledge, illuminated by the rising rays of the sun. The children walking to school stand for education for all — a journey of harmony, gender equality, purity, peace and friendship.

The kindling flame signifies the struggle for victory, knowledge and wisdom, the light of spiritual knowing, and the passing of tradition from one generation to the next.

Our motto: Knowledge is Power.”
